	The Wavy Lounge Chair delivers distinctive flair and comfort through an exuberant layering of 

colored felt

—

material collected from the scraps of larger manufacturers. 


These layers are rigid enough to provide support, yet flexible enough to conform when sat upon.

Together the layers produce a comfortable seat shape, however, each individual layer is a bit wacky, subtly misaligning with its neighbors. This individuality accommodates unavoidable errors during fabrication, as the felt is cut with a knife rather than a die.

These felt layers are then entwined by a white steel frame, a continuous curve that bundles the felt together and supports it from below. This curve extends downward to become legs and upward to hold a wooden back.

	The back is milled from a block of laminated Sapele

its fabrication is highly precise. While the layers of felt must shout their individuality to hide imprecision, the Sapele remains monolithic, yielding a smoother form for the back.

Athens has two dire needs, additional burial grounds &#38;amp; larger parks.
The city has run out of cemetery space — the deceased can occupy a plot for only three years before they're exhumed to accommodate another burial. With religious opposition to cremation and an aging population, Athenians need a new place for their dead to rest in peace.


Additionally, most of the city's open space is associated with ancient ruins, intended for commercial tourism rather than public use. Although absentee landlords have enabled the proliferation of guerrilla pocket parks, Athenians deserve larger green spaces, more sizable reprieves from the city's relentless density.

This project repurposes a site of ancient infrastructure to satisfy the contemporary city’s needs. In the countryside between ancient Athens and the port city of Piraeus, two parallel walls produced a fortified path between the Greek capital and its main shipping outlet.

Long since gone, these walls can be traced through modern Athens by following Piraeus Avenue and Metro Line 1, modern infrastructures that were built atop the old.

Currently, Athens is blanketed by a continuous crust of development, which is interrupted only by the acropolis and other ancient landforms that pierce through it — reference points in an otherwise homogeneous fabric. This project acts as an inverted reference point, deviating from the modern city through depth rather than height.

Instead of typical cemetery space, two vertical mausoleums follow the footprints of the long walls and frame a large park in between.

 The two mausoleums act as retaining walls, allowing the park to sink as much as thirty feet below street level. This sectional move reveals the scale of the historic walls while providing a cool, shaded, and lush public space, rather than another arid peak.

The area between the long walls is currently underutilized

 —&#38;nbsp;an opportune place to clear buildings and create open space. However, despite its disuse, the site is within a dense city and requires multiple functions to justify openness and stimulate consistent use.

 Fleeting occupations, such as passing through on the metro, exist alongside the permanent occupation of burial. The timeless elements of park and 

mausoleum

 mediate between quicker public uses and the ancient history of the long walls.

&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; A literal no-place, atopia represents the spatial end-product of a society seemingly flattened by supra-territorial flows of information and material. It expresses both a physical artifact and condition of mass culture, and like the global systems of production and consumption from which it is conceived, atopia is both nowhere and everywhere at once. For the contributors of Perspecta 54, the ephemeral conditions of atopia are also an invitation to an equally unconstrained critical practice. Blurred boundaries — geopolitical, virtual, technical, disciplinary&#38;nbsp;—&#38;nbsp;offer sites for transgressive speculation and critique from beyond the limits of traditional design agency.
&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; What results is a form of design practice that ambiguously straddles impossibility and hyper-reality. Atopia rejects both the escapist fantasy of utopia and the nihilism of dystopia, favoring instead a conceptual middle ground from which real-world conditions can be productively engaged and challenged. Architecture’s traditional objectives of critical inquiry ⁠— particularly the location of modes of complicity, agency, and resistance within larger structures ⁠— are mediated and reframed through non-traditional strategies of speculative design and fiction. For a profession that is routinely asked to navigate extreme complexity with limited tools, this approach suggests an expanded operational domain and possibilities for reinvigorated creative thought.
&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; From urban crises and climate emergencies to border disputes and geopolitics, Perspecta 54 examines atopia both as the site of architecture’s critical confrontation with hegemonic systems and the theoretical space in which its own processes can be challenged.

Dual-stage casting was used to create a&#38;nbsp;voronoi-based masonry wall: Each colored gypsum-stone is formed by pressure from its neighbors and its unique position within the formwork.

Once the slurry is mixed and dyed in small batches, it’s poured into balloons for the first stage of casting.

	After the gypsum is cured, balloons are removed and each stone is placed back in its original position for the second stage of casting. Then the formwork is re-sealed and a hot wax mortar is added.

As an institution, the NYC O.E.M. (Office of Emergency Management) is responsible not only for educating the public about potential emergencies, but also for coordinating city-wide response efforts in times of crisis.

	This proposed redesign for the NYC O.E.M. acknowledges tensions inherent within the institution’s operations as well as between the current building and it’s atypical site, Cadman Plaza Park.

The building must negotiate between opposing scalar demands –approachability
for the park-goer and iconicity relative to speeding cars – which results in a low-rise perimeter and towering apex, all wrapped in the same tensile skin.

	To function properly, the building must attract and educate the public while remaining poised for lockdown, juggling transparency and security, invitation and exclusion.

To do this, the entire ground level becomes a continuation of the park – physically seamless but specifically programmed.

Lowell, MA is a diverse, mid-sized city and the epicenter of 19th-century textile manufacturing in the U.S. Like many post-industrial cities, Lowell is eager to reinvent itself and avoid an urban identity crisis.However, the city is dramatically parceled by infrastructural boundaries
— a highway, railroad, and canals — which converge at our undeveloped site. The
result is a sprawling void that separates the city’s Downtown (white), Highlands 

(mostly South-Asian) and Acre (mixed immigrant) districts.
 Our proposal seeks to activate this void as a crossroads rather than spawn a new urban center from scratch. Our priority is to bridge the disparate but potentially symbiotic neighborhoods that border the site.

	Lowell’s immigrant population is crucial to the city’s redevelopment. At twice the national average, this growing subgroup is helping to revitalize the city. In order to serve all citizens of Lowell,
we cultivate the social and economic benefits of difference through hybrid building types and overlapping zones of activity, represented in drawings by orange s-curves.

At
the building scale, we must break up the monolithic and monotonous mill architecture, which dominates Lowell’s fabric.

	Voids are carved into elongated mill buildings, historic building shells are repurposed, and new buildings bridge old impasses. The mill building’s structural framework is extended beyond its walls, crossing between interior and exterior space. New cores are also added into the mix, providing utilities, structural reinforcement, and vertical circulation where necessary.

 These manipulations transform Lowell’s homogenous architecture, 

promoting a mixed urban ecology.

At the district scale, we break Lowell down into distinct
yet overlapping zones. Each zone is centered on an easily achieved intervention, a focal point from which mixed ecologies spread. Below are five examples.

Rather than adding pedestrian bridges over the railroad, the train station itself becomes a platform of connection. The new building stitches together the Downtown, Highlands and Acre districts, their confluence enlivened by a culinary school, restaurants &#38;amp; grocery store.

The Switch is a spatial concept for the near future&#38;nbsp;—&#38;nbsp;a meetingplace where people switch between different modes of transit.&#38;nbsp;
Our research focuses on the Bay Area, where there’s heavy commuter traffic despite a robust rapid transit system. 	North Berkeley station is particularly interesting because there are several modes of transit running through it that are underutilized. This problem is linked to the vast space allotted for parking, which, despite its size, still fails to provide adequate park-&#38;amp;-ride opportunities.

	Lots fill up early in the morning and lay lifeless throughout the day. This commuter rush acts as a barrier to entry, making parking a pivotal obstacle to increasing BART and bus ridership.

	While it's practical to live near transit, this proximity provides no additional conveniences. The station is in the heart of the neighborhood, yet all errands and businesses sit at its periphery, pulling people outward.

	The station’s single-use condition often renders it vacant, which can be unsafe in the evening. Some members of the Berkeley Parents Network even&#38;nbsp;advise against walking alone from North Berkeley station at night.

	The introduction of AV fleets presents radical new potential for the site. If park-&#38;amp;-ride commuters are dropped off there instead, everyone benefits.

	Eliminating an early parking rush helps trains fill continuously and at an even rate, increasing overall ridership and alleviating morning congestion.
